President Obama Says Stop Watching Cable News
On Wednesday, President Obama had a Howard Beale moment. Speaking to a group of Democratic senators, the President exhorted his listeners — and, by extension, all Americans — to break the cable news habit.
“If everybody here turned off your CNN, your Fox, just turn off the TV, MSNBC, blogs, and just go talk to folks out there, instead of being in this echo chamber where the topic is constantly politics,” Obama said, things would be an awful lot better in Washington.
His appeal threatened to alienate some of his loyal supporters in the media – MSNBC cut away from Obama’s remarks shortly after, with a nervous joke — but it was dead on target.
It doesn’t really matter whether Bill O’Reilly or Keith Olbermann is the bigger blowhard, or whether Shepard Smith is less biased than Wolf Blitzer. The fact is, if you’re getting your news from cable, you’re getting misinformed. You’re being told things are important that aren’t. You’re getting a diet of stories selected primarily for their strong visuals and sensationalistic details, not for their news value. You’re watching a lot of split-screen shots of people talking over each other so loudly that none can be understood.
In short: If you watch a great deal of cable news, you are making yourself stupider. Put down the remote control. Pick up a newspaper. You may not have that luxury much longer.
New Book Says Secret Service Cuts Corner on Obama Protecting
The U.S. Secret Service has cut corners in ways that may have jeopardized the safety of President Obama, according to a new book by a veteran Washington journalist and author, Ron Kessler. The book, “In the President’s Secret Service: Behind the Scenes with Agents in the Line of Fire and the Presidents They Protect,” details instances of “laxness in how they protect” Obama, according to a source at Random House, which will officially release the book Aug. 4.
While the agents assigned to protect Obama and other principals are described as dedicated and valiant, Kessler asserts that in recent years the management of the agency “has betrayed its mission by cutting corners, risking the assassination of President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and their families,” the publisher says. One current agent tells the author: “It’s a miracle we have not had a successful assassination.”
But neither the publisher nor Kessler himself, in an interview, would say what corners were cut or what the laxness entailed and how they endangered the president.
Global: Obama Most Popular Leader
What a difference a year makes.
NYT: President Barack Obama is by far the most popular world leader among people in major Western nations and is the one political figure on whom people consistently pin their hopes in the economic crisis, according to new polls conducted for the International Herald Tribune.
About 80 percent of people in France, Germany, Italy and Spain have a positive view of Mr. Obama, a ratio that declines only slightly, to about 70 percent, in the other two countries surveyed, Britain and the United States. The only politician who comes close is Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, who gets a positive rating from two-thirds of those in Continental Europe but from only one-third of Brits and Americans.
“I believe there will be a rise in political extremism in the United States, particularly from the right, between now and the next presidential election,” said Robert J. Kepka of Addison, Illinois, one of the people surveyed who agreed to a follow-up interview by e-mail. He said he expected such a result, however, “not as a result of the current economic crisis, but rather the perceived erosion of conservative Christian values.”
FIRST 100 DAYS!!
The world is judging Obama vs. other Presidents that preceeded him. His approval rating is a solid 69% and compared to Bush I, Bush II, Clinton and Reagan, President Obama beat all of them with solidly, and Reagan by a mere percent point in his first 100 days.
President Obama was handed a severe economic collapse, global distain, two wars an education disaster and a country in neglect. With that and after 100 days, how do you think Obama is doing? Post your comments.
OBAMA REDEMPTION: Possible Bush Torture Probe
President Barack Obama left the door open Tuesday to prosecuting Bush administration officials who devised the legal authority for gruesome terror-suspect interrogations, saying the United States lost “our moral bearings” with use of the tactics.
The question of whether to bring charges against those who devised justification for the methods “is going to be more of a decision for the attorney general within the parameters of various laws and I don’t want to prejudge that,” Obama said.
