On mean, mad Marks and tackles for no gain

It’s a game of inches. So a couple of feet are making a huge difference in the life of Titans defensive tackle Sen’Derrick Marks. He finished strong last season. Though I am not a big believer in a big finish carrying over to the next season, it may be what’s about to happen for Marks. “I came in last year in a totally different system off of shoulder surgery and all of that,” he said. “It’s not an excuse. Moving from tackle to noseguard and then just finding my way.

Bills ready for Tim Tebow, Wildcat?

The New York Jets have been hiding their Wildcat package with Tim Tebow all summer for the regular season. Now, the wait is over as the Buffalo Bills will be the first opponent to face the Jets and their Wildcat package under new offensive coordinator Tony Sparano. There is a lot of mystery surrounding how Tebow will be used offensively. How many plays will the Jets run the Wildcat? Will there be new wrinkles compared to what we saw with Sparano in Miami?

Winslow’s Patriots experience illuminating

An update and thoughts on Kellen Winslow’s recent release from the Seattle Seahawks: Failed physical with Pats: Winslow failed a physical examination while meeting with the New England Patriots, according to Mary Paoletti of CSNNE.com. That lends support to the Seahawks’ thinking. Seattle wanted Winslow to take a pay reduction to minimize risks. Three teams in less than four months have decided against having Winslow on their roster. It’s an upset at this point if Winslow gets the more than $3 million he was scheduled to receive from Seattle for 2012.

Actually, MJD, I said no such thing …

Maurice Jones-Drew is well aware of what’s written and said about him. I’m among those who believe he’s overly sensitive about much of it. Today, in talking with some Jacksonville reporters, he was asked about all that. He deemed me worthy of special mention. “It’s funny, because it seems like people want me to fail, which is awesome, because it’s been like that since I was growing up,” Jones-Drew said.

More bad news for Redskins’ secondary

So, a week ago, it looked as though the Washington Redskins’ starting safeties for Sunday’s season opener in New Orleans might be Brandon Meriweather and Tanard Jackson. While you might not have been overly thrilled with that pairing, you’d had a chance to get used to the idea that it could work. Well, on Friday, the NFL announced that Jackson was suspended for a year for his latest violation of its drug policy. And on Wednesday, Redskins coach Mike Shanahan told reporters that Meriweather had sprained ligaments in his knee in Monday’s practice and will miss 2-to-4 weeks.

Panthers optimistic on Jonathan Stewart

BRADENTON, Fla. — It sounds as if the Tampa Bay Buccaneers could be the first defense to face Carolina’s three-pronged backfield. Coach Ron Rivera said Wednesday he is optimistic Jonathan Stewart, who was sidelined at the end of the preseason with an ankle injury, will be ready for Sunday’s regular-season opener. “Jonathan didn’t practice as far as the team stuff was concerned,’’ Rivera said after the Panthers worked out at IMG Academy.

Jason Witten active for Cowboys vs. Giants

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten, who’s been out since the team’s first preseason game with a lacerated spleen, has been cleared by doctors and will play in Wednesday night’s regular-season opener against the New York Giants. Witten was on the field during warmups, catching passes from quarterback Tony Romo, and around 7 pm when the inactives were released for the game, Witten’s name was not on the Cowboys’ list. It’s a bit of a surprise, since Witten had been listed as doubtful for the game and the team was determined to be extremely careful with an injury to an internal organ.

Three things revisited: Seahawks-Broncos

Looking back on three things discussed here before Seattle’s 30-10 preseason victory at Denver on Saturday night: 1. QB competition continued. Matt Flynn did not appear to play his way out of the starting job, but another impressive showing from rookie Russell Wilson should give the Seahawks something to think about. Penalties and pressure were problems early. Flynn held the ball too long another time. He overthrew Braylon Edwards in the end zone (not sure if that was a throwaway).

Observation deck: Chiefs-Rams

A look at the Chiefs’ 31-17 loss at St. Louis on Saturday night: This performance wasn’t as smooth as the preseason opener for the Chiefs. The biggest issue was that the first-team defense allowed two touchdowns in the first quarter. Offensively, starting quarterback Matt Cassel put together his second strong preseason performance, completing 13 of 18 passes for 142 yards. Here’s the deal, folks: Preseason games don’t matter much, but Cassel is looking good and that’s paramount for the Chiefs.
