We’re gearing up for an even hotter one this week in the 206. No, not just the temperature, but the political climate.
As reported on the pod-cannon, on July 10th activists from the Red Spark Collective were raided by Seattle Police. On July 25th, three homes were raided in Portland, Oregon by approximately 60-80 police including FBI and Joint Terrorism Task Force. In both cases, no arrests were made.
In Portland, electronics were confiscated along with additional personal items. In Seattle, anything the search warrant deemed “anarchist materials’, including literature, clothing, and banners were taken.
Since that time, grand jury subpoenas have been served to individuals in Olympia, Seattle, and Portland. The two Portland defendants have vowed to NOT cooperate.
All legal documents related to the searches and grand jury are sealed, and the FBI will only say it is related to an “ongoing violent crime” investigation. But based on interviews with residents, what police told them at the scene, as well as what activists were told, all of this is related to the ongoing political persecution of anarchists in particular, and the Occupy movement generally.
This is another manifestation of the Obama administration, and your tax dollars, at work. Still planning on holding your nose and voting for him again? Keep in mind that for many it was his failure to keep his promises, along with the rapid expansion of Bush-era policies, that moved them to join the Occupy movement.
The grand jury is scheduled to convene on August 2nd at the federal courthouse in Seattle ( 7th Avenue and Stewart St.). And we will be there with our comrades protesting.
