Julian Assange entered the London Ecuadorian embassy and asserted he was being persecuted and requested political asylum. The Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino said Assange asked for asylum under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Assange: “I can confirm I arrived at the Ecuadorian Embassy and sought diplomatic sanctuary and political asylum”.
On May 30, 2012 Assange lost his Supreme Court appeal in England to avoid extradition to Sweden though the court gave Assange a stay of 14 days on the extradition order. This final appeal to the Supreme court was rejected and barring any appeal to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, extradition would have takes place over a ten day period commencing on June 28, 2012.
Ecuadorian foreign minister Ricardo Patiño announced that Assange had applied for political asylum, and stated that the Ecuadorian government is analyzing his request. He also told local media that Assange is currently in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London.
