A man accidentally shot himself in the buttocks when he dropped his concealed handgun at a movie theater in Sparks, Nevada on Tuesday night.
Police said that the 56-year-old moviegoer had come to the Century 14 theater to watch “The Bourne Legacy” when the incident occurred, according to the Reno Gazette Journal.
“Witnesses inside the theater at the time the shot was fired stated that a (man) was adjusting himself in his seat when a gun he had on him discharged,” Sparks police Sgt. Pay Dyer said in a statement.
The man reportedly apologized to the people seated around him and left the theater. Police later located him at a Reno hospital where he was being treated for the gunshot wound.
“There was no panic in the theater as only five people heard the shot out of the approximate 30 people in attendance,” police told the Gazette Journal.
Police revealed that the man, whose name had not been released, had a permit allowing him to legally conceal the weapon.
Sparks City Attorney Chet Adams told NBC News that he would be inclined to charge the man for negligently discharging a firearm in public, which is a misdemeanor in Nevada.
“You’re supposed to know the laws, you’re supposed to be vigilant in carrying that weapon, and you’re supposed to be trained to use that weapon,” Adams explained.
“The potential for harm is very strong whenever the discharge of a firearm occurs,” he added. “That’s something you can’t ignore. Obviously there was a round chambered and [the man] was in a public place. Those circumstances warrant charges very seriously.”
The shooting in Sparks came less than a month after 12 were killed and 58 were injured during a massacre at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado.
