Rep. Steve King pushes to ban same sex marriages on military bases

Rep. Steve King (R-IA) on Thursday pushed for legislation that would prohibit same sex couples from having wedding ceremonies at military facilities.

He said on the House floor that the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) prohibited such ceremonies and accused the Obama administration of trying to undermine “marriage between one man and one woman within our military ranks.”

“The Defense of Marriage Act means this: Marriage means only a legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife, and the word ‘spouse’ only refers to a member of the opposite sex who is a husband or a wife,” King said. “Pretty simple statute being contravened by the President of the United States as exercised through the Secretary of Defense.”

His “DOMA Limitation” amendment to the 2013 defense funding bill would prevent the use of military facilities or the pay of military chaplains for same sex marriages.

Currently, military chaplains can decide whether or not to perform same sex marriages.
